GEO and AEO: How to Get Your Brand Cited in AI Answers
Search is splitting in two. Here is the practical playbook I use to get brands cited inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, not just ranked on page one.
On this page
For fifteen years, SEO had one job: rank a blue link on page one. That job is now half the story. A growing share of buyers never see the blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question and act on the answer they get back.
If your brand is not in that answer, you do not exist for that query. This is what GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are about, and here is how I actually approach it.
The shift is not hypothetical. AI Overviews appeared on roughly 47% of Google queries in Q1 2026, up from 32% a year earlier, and queries that trigger one see zero-click rates averaging 83%. The answer is eating the click.
GEO and AEO are not "new SEO", they are a second surface
Classic SEO optimizes for a ranking. GEO/AEO optimizes for a citation: getting an answer engine to extract your content, trust it, and name you as the source. The mechanics overlap with technical SEO, but the target is different. You are no longer fighting for position, you are fighting to be the sentence the model quotes.
The five things that actually move citations
-
Answer the question in the first two sentences. Answer engines lift self-contained, declarative passages. Bury the answer under 400 words of preamble and it never gets extracted. Lead with the answer, then support it.
-
Structure for extraction. Clear H2/H3 questions, short paragraphs, tables, and lists give the model clean units to quote. A wall of text does not.
-
Build the entity, not just the page. Models reason over entities. Consistent schema markup (Organization, Person, Product, FAQ), a coherent internal link graph, and matching mentions across the web tell the model what you are and what you know about. This is the part most teams skip.
-
Earn E-E-A-T signals the model can verify. Author identity, citations to primary sources, and corroboration from other trusted pages all raise the odds you get named instead of a competitor. Ahrefs' 2026 study of 75,000 brands found web mentions predict AI Overview citation roughly 3x better than backlinks, a real reordering of what matters.
-
Measure citation share, not just rankings. Track how often you appear across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude for your priority questions. That is the new rank tracker.
Where to start this week
Pick your ten highest-intent questions. For each, check who the answer engines currently cite. Then restructure your best page to answer that question cleanly in the opening, add the right schema, and tighten the entity signals around it. Re-check in thirty days.
You do not need to abandon SEO. Technical health, crawlability, and Core Web Vitals still gate everything. GEO/AEO is the layer you add on top for a world where the answer, not the link, wins the click.
That is the work I do every day. If you want your brand cited in the answers your buyers are already reading, let's talk.
